Make a Baltazar felt toy / Haz un juguete de fieltro de Baltazar

The Catholic Bible tells us about three gifts that were given to Jesus to pay tribute at birth: gold, incense and myrrh. Over time it was assumed that these were delivered by the three wise men from the East, whom are not mentioned as such in the bible, however today they are known as Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar. / La biblia católica nos cuenta sobre tres regalos que se le entregaron a Jesus para rendirle tributo a la hora de nacer: oro, incienso y mirra. Con el tiempo se supuso que estos fueron entregados por los tres reyes magos del oriente, los cuales no son mencionados como tal en la biblia, sin embargo hoy en día son conocidos como Melchor, Gaspar y Baltazar.

The story tells that the three wise men were guided by a star to the location where Jesus would be born. Melchior was an old man with white hair and a beard who came from Europe, he delivered myrrh which is an aromatic substance that was highly valued in ancient times and represents the symbol of man. Gaspar the youngest of the three wise men came from Asia. He delivered incense, which represents the symbol of God. And Gaspar, a black man from Africa, gave gold which has the meaning of king. / La historia cuenta que los tres reyes magos fueron guiados al lugar donde nacería Jesus a través de una estrella. Melchor era un anciano de pelo y barba blanca que venia de Europa, el entregó mirra, una sustancia aromática que era muy valorada en la antigüedad y representa el símbolo del hombre. Gaspar el más joven de los tres reyes magos procedía de Asia. Él entregó incienso, este representa el símbolo de Dios. Y Gaspar un hombre de raza negra proveniente de Africa entregó  oro, el cual tiene el significado de rey.  

January 6th is celebrated in Spain and Latin American countries as the day of the three wise men, it is the most anticipated day for all children since they look forward to the gifts they will receive from the three wise men. If you have had the opportunity to celebrate this tradition you can agree that it was a moment full of emotions when you got up early to see what gifts they had brought you. This year it occurred to me to create a doll that would be one of the three wise men, I decided to create Baltazar first. I hope you like this tutorial and enjoy this great character. / El 6 de enero se celebra en España y otros países de Latinoamérica cómo el día de los Reyes Magos, este es el día mas esperado por todos niños ya que esperan con ansias los regalos que estos les van a traer. Si haz tenido la oportunidad de celebrar esta tradición podrás coincidir que era un momento lleno de emociones el levantarse temprano a ver que regalos te habían traído. Este año se me ocurrió hacer un muñeco de uno de los tres reyes magos y decidí comenzar por crear a Baltazar. Espero les guste este tutorial y disfruten a este gran personaje. 

Materials / Materiales:

• Brown, pink, white, and purple felt / Fieltro café, rosa, blanco y morado
• White, black and purple thread / Hilo blanco, negro y morado
• Scissors / Tijeras
• Marker / Plumón
• Cotton stuffing / Relleno de algodón

Steps / Pasos:

1. Start by making the shape of a drop in the brown felt and cut it out, this will be the face of our character. Once the figure is cut we will place it on the white felt and draw the drop, we will also draw an edge that will be the piece that goes around the face. Then we will cut this piece and sew them together. / Comienza trazando la forma de una gota en el fieltro café y recórtala. Esta será la cara de nuestro personaje. Una vez recortada la figura la vamos a poner encima del fieltro blanco y trazaremos la gota, también trazaremos un borde que sera la pieza que va alrededor de la cara. Después recortaremos esta pieza y las coseremos juntas. 

We can use a clip to hold the pieces together as we sew them together. / Podemos utilizar un clip para mantener ambas piezas juntas mientras las cosemos.

2. Now place the piece on the purple felt and with the marker paint the oval that will be the turban on our doll, then cut it out and use it to draw another identical piece and cut it out too. / Ahora coloca la pieza sobre el fieltro morado y con el plumón pinta el ovalo que sera el turbante del muñeco, después recórtalo y utilízalo para trazar otra pieza idéntica y recórtala también. 

3. Take the black thread and sew the shape of the eyes, nose and mouth. Once you have finished sewing Baltazar’s face, sew the entire piece to one of your purple figures. / Toma el hilo negro y cose la forma de los ojos, la nariz y la boca. Una vez que hayas terminado de coserle la cara a Baltazar cose toda la pieza a una de las figuras moradas. 

4. We are going to trace the shape of a shirt on the white felt and cut out two pieces. You can use the first shirt you make to trace out the second one. With the brown felt we are going to cut out two hands, each should also have a pair. Start sewing the hands together and leave a small space open which is where you will be sewing it onto the shirt and filling it in with cotton. / Vamos a trazar la forma de una camisa en el fieltro blanco y cortar dos piezas idénticas, puedes usar la primera camisa que hagas para trazar la segunda. Con el fieltro café vamos a recortar las manos, cada mano deberá tener su par. Comienza a coser las manos juntas dejando un pequeño espacio abierto que sera donde se coserá con la camisa y se llenará de algodón.

5. Sew the sides of the shirt and both hands together. You have to leave the top and bottom open since we will be attaching those to the other parts of our toy. / Cose los dos lados de la camisa y las dos manos juntas. Debes dejar la parte superior e inferior abiertas, ya que las coseremos con las otras partes de nuestro juguete.

6. Now take the purple felt figure we had previously cut out and place it under the head, also take the shirt and put it in place beneath the head. Sew the purple pieces together from the edge and when you get to the shirt make sure that you sew the top of the shirt with the face and the back of our doll with the back side of the purple felt. This way they will be joined together yet you will still be able to fill in the head with cotton through the shirt. / Ahora toma la figura de fieltro púrpura que habíamos cortado previamente y colócala debajo de la cabeza, también toma la camisa y colócala en su lugar debajo de la cabeza. Cose las piezas moradas juntas por el borde, cuando llegues a la camisa asegúrate de coser la parte superior de la camisa con la cara y la espalda con el fieltro morado. De esta manera se unirán pero aún podrás rellenar la cabeza con algodón a través de la camisa.

Once you are done sewing these pieces together start filling in the head, arms and shirt with the cotton. / Una vez que hayas terminado de coser estas piezas empieza a rellenar la cabeza, los brazos y la camisa con el algodón.

7.  Now for the bottom part of our Baltazar cut out two identical shapes from the purple felt in the shape of pants. Then sew the sides together, for the top you will have to sew it exactly like you did with the shirt onto the face, except this time it will be onto the shirt. The bottom of the pants will be left open. / Ahora, para la parte inferior de Baltazar, corta dos formas idénticas del fieltro morado en la forma de pantalones. Luego cóselo de los lados, la parte superior se tiene que coser exactamente como cosiste la camisa a la cara, excepto que esta vez será con la camisa. Y la parte inferior de los pantalones se quedará abierta.

My tip is to fill in what you can of the pants with the cotton before sewing it onto the shirt, this way it will be easier and faster. / Mi consejo es que llenes con algodón lo que puedas de los pantalones antes de coserlos a la camisa, de esta manera será más fácil y rápido.

8. And for the final step cut out from the brown felt the shape of two feet, remember you need to have a pair of each. Sew them together and fill them up with cotton, then attach them to the pants. / Y para los pasos finales corta del fieltro café la forma de dos pies, recuerda que necesitas tener un par de cada uno. Cóselos juntos y rellénalos con algodón, después cóseslos a los pantalones.

9. Now taking the pink felt cut out a large rectangle that will go around your toy’s chest. Pass it underneath the arm and over the other shoulder, join them back together by sewing them up. / Ahora, tomando el fieltro rosa corta un rectángulo grande, el cuál rodeará el pecho de tu juguete. Pásalo por debajo del brazo y sobre el hombro opuesto y después vuelve a unirlos cosiéndolos.
