Make a panda message bottle / Haz una botella de mensaje de Panda

The idea of placing a message inside a bottle and letting it drift into the ocean until it reaches a destination where your message can be read has been out there for thousands of years. In the past people have used this method when they have found themselves stranded and looking for a way to reach out to civilization, or with the purpose of having their message heard in a near future after they are gone. For example, a ship with soldiers, which was hit in World War I, was sinking and the soldiers sent out message bottles stating their location and situation with the hope of being saved from drowning. / La idea de colocar un mensaje dentro de una botella y dejarla a la deriva en el mar hasta que llegue a un destino donde se pueda leer su mensaje ha estado presente durante miles de años. En el pasado, las personas usaban este método cuando se encontraban varadas y buscando una forma de llegar a la civilización, o con el propósito de que su mensaje se escuchara en un futuro cercano después de que se fueran. Por ejemplo, un barco con soldados, que fue golpeado en la Primera Guerra Mundial, se estaba hundiendo y los soldados enviaron botellas con mensajes indicando su ubicación y situación con la esperanza de ser salvados antes de ahogarse.

We have seen bottle messages in movies, cartoons, and stories, yet if we wanted to send an urgent message this way the probabilities of someone finding our bottle in a short time are almost null. Probably after a couple of years you could get lucky. Nowadays, bottle messages are used by scientists who study ocean currents, so if you get to find one it might not be such an exciting message. / Hemos visto mensajes de botellas en películas, dibujos animados e historias, pero si quisiéramos enviar un mensaje urgente de esta manera las probabilidades de que alguien encuentre nuestra botella en poco tiempo son casi nulas. Probablemente después de un par de años podrías tener suerte. Hoy en día, los científicos usan los mensajes de botella para estudiar las corrientes oceánicas, por lo que si encuentras uno puede que no sea un mensaje tan emocionante.

In this blog I will show you how to make a small panda out of polymer clay and place it inside a bottle. Of course this is just an idea for a modern gift that replaces the written note, but you can make anything that has a significance for you and your partner, friend or family member. / Dado que la idea de un mensaje de botella puede ser un gesto romántico, se han convertido en excelentes regalos para su ser querido, o para sus amigos y familiares en general. En este blog te mostraré cómo hacer un pequeño panda con arcilla polimérica y colocarlo dentro de una botella. Por supuesto, esta es solo una idea para un regalo moderno que reemplaza la nota escrita, pero puedes hacer cualquier cosa que tenga un significado para ti y tu pareja, amigo o familiar.

What materials do you need? / ¿Qué materiales necesitas?

• White polymer clay / Arcilla polimérica blanca
• Black polymer clay / Arcilla polimérica negro
• Cork glass bottle / Botella de vidrio con corcho
• Tools that help you mold the clay (I used the stick of two brushes) / Herramientas que te ayuden a moldear la arcilla (yo utilice los palos de dos pinceles)
• Silicone / Silicón
• Oven / Horno

Steps / Pasos:

1. For those who have never used this material before polymer clay is a hard material, it does not resemble play dough that is easy to mold and is also soft. We’ll start by taking a small piece of the black clay and molding it until it softens a bit and it can be given texture. The first thing we will do is make the shape of the legs, chest and arms. / Para aquellos que nunca han usado este material la arcilla polimérica es un material duro, no se parece a la plastilina que es fácil de moldear y además es suave. Vamos a comenzar tomando un pequeño pedazo de la arcilla negra y amasándolo hasta que se suavice un poco y se le pueda dar textura. Lo primero que haremos es crear la forma de las piernas, el pecho y los brazos. 

2. Once you have the legs and arms we are going to take a piece of white clay and make a medium ball, which we will mold as we join the rest of our pieces. We are going to put it on top of the legs. With another piece of black clay we will make a smaller ball and join it to the arms, after molding and joining it we will put it on top of the white ball. Gently slide your finger to pull both clays on top of each other in order for them to stick together. / Una vez que obtengas las piernas y brazos vamos a tomar un pedazo de arcilla blanco y hacer una pelota mediana, la cual moldearemos conforme la vayamos uniendo al resto de nuestros pedazos. La vamos a poner sobre las piernas. Con otro pedazo de arcilla negro haremos una pelota más pequeña y la uniremos a los brazos, después de moldearla y unirla la pondremos sobre la pelota blanca. Desliza suavemente el dedo para recorrer ambas arcillas encima una de la otra y que estás se peguen juntas.

3. Make a big oval white ball shape for the face. Then with the help of a stick place two small black balls for the eyes, and on top of these place two small white balls for the pupils. / Haz una bola grande blanca ovalada para la cara. Luego, con la ayuda de un palo coloca dos pequeñas bolas negras para los ojos y encima de estas coloca dos pequeñas bolas blancas para las pupilas.

4. For the pandas nose we will make another oval white ball and place it in front of the eyes, and a small black oval ball that will make the shape of the nose. With our stick you can just poke two small holes so that the nose has better detail. Place small oval ears with the black polymeric clay. / Para la nariz de los pandas haremos otra bola blanca ovalada y la colocaremos frente a los ojos. Y una pequeña bola ovalada negra que formará la nariz. Con nuestro palo podemos hacer dos agujeros pequeños para que la nariz tenga mejor detalle. Coloca pequeñas orejas ovaladas con la arcilla polimérica negra.

5. For the final step make a small white ball and four tiny ones. Paste 4 series of this one on each paw. For the tail we can make a small black ball and paste it on the back. / Para el paso final, haz una pequeña bola blanca y cuatro mini. Pega 4 series de esta en cada pata. Para la cola podemos hacer una pequeña bola negra y pegarla en la parte trasera.

Tip: the size of your panda will depend on the size of your bottle. I had to make a smaller version of my panda following the same steps in order for it to fit inside the bottle. / Consejo: el tamaño de tu panda dependerá del tamaño de tu botella. Tuve que hacer una versión más pequeña de mi panda siguiendo los mismos pasos para que este cupiera dentro de la botella.

7. Place it inside the oven for as long as your polymeric instructions indicate. / Mételo dentro del horno por el tiempo indicado en las instrucciones de tu arcilla polimérica.

6. Place a bit of silicone at the bottom of your panda and place it inside the bottle. If you have some tweezers it might help you straighten the panda inside the bottle, then let it dry and place the cork back on top. / Coloca un poco de silicón en la parte de abajo de tu panda y colócalo adentro de la botella. Si tienes unas pinzas podría ayudarte a enderezar el panda dentro de la botella, luego déjalo secar y vuelve a colocar el corcho encima.
