How to make a ribbon bow? / ¿Como hacer un moño?

Part of the excitement of Christmas is the exchange of gifts. The surprise of opening each gift and discovering what they have given you is the most exciting part, or to see the surprise face that your gifts generate for others. Have you ever wondered where does the tradition of wrapping gifts come from? Or what is the reason why we wrap them? / Parte de la emoción de la navidad se encuentra en el intercambio de regalos. La sorpresa de abrir cada regalo y descubrir que te han dado es la parte más emocionante, o el ver la cara de sorpresa que tus regalos le generan a los demás. Alguna vez se han preguntado ¿de donde viene la tradición de envolver los regalos? ¿O cual es el motivo de porque los envolvemos?

In 1843, Christmas cards began to be imposed along with the wrapping paper that had Christmas prints. This custom was enhanced during the reign of Queen Victoria in England (1838-1901), and later on spread to the United States. However, the real boom in the United States arose in 1917 when the Hall brothers, who owned the Hallmark store, began distributing white, green and red wrapping paper. Given the success that was obtained with this product the first year, they introduced the promotion of 3×2 the following year making them the first introduce such promotions to the market. Today Hallmark is the largest empire of wrapping paper in the world. / En 1843 comenzaron a imponerse las tarjetas navideñas junto con el papel de regalo que tenía impresos navideños. Esta costumbre se vio potenciada durante el reinado de la Reina Victoria en Inglaterra (1838-1901), y después se esparció hacia los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, el verdadero auge en Estados Unidos surgió en 1917 cuando los hermanos Hall, propietarios de la tienda Hallmark, comenzaron a distribuir papel de regalo de colores blanco, verde y rojo. Ante el éxito que se obtuvo con dicho producto el primer año, introdujeron el 3×2 al año siguiente, de este modo también siendo los primeros en introducir este tipo de promociones al mercado. Hoy en día Hallmark es el mayor imperio de papel de regalo en todo el mundo.

Several studies affirm that wrappings easily immerse us in the Christmas spirit, creating greater excitement when it comes to opening gifts and compensating for the disappointment of it, if it is not to our liking. In this post I will share how to make a simple bow to decorate your gifts. / Diversos estudios afirman que las envolturas nos sumergen fácilmente en el espíritu navideño, creando mayor excitación a la hora de abrir los regalos y compensa la decepción del mismo en caso de no ser de nuestro agrado. En esta entrada les voy a compartir como hacer un sencillo moño para decorar sus regalos. 

Materials needed / Materiales  necesarios:

• Ribbon / Listón
• Scissors / Tijeras

Steps / Pasos:

1. The first step consists on deciding how big you want your bow to be, if you want it to be little then you have to cut a smaller piece of ribbon, if you want it big then you have to cut out a longer piece. / El primer paso consiste en decidir qué tan grande quieres que sea tu moño, si quieres que sea pequeño entonces tiene que cortar un pedazo de listón más pequeño, si lo quieres grande entonces tienes que cortar un pedazo más largo.

2. Start by shaping your ribbon into two loops just like the image below. / Comienza formando tu listón en dos bucles como la imagen de abajo.

3. Take the right loop and pass it over the left loop. / Toma el bucle derecho y pasalo sobre el bucle izquierdo.

4. Then pass it towards the back and through the small hole that was left between the two loops when we started folding. We are going to pull it forming a small knot, we have to adjust so that the knot is tightened and both loops end up the same size. / Después pásalo hacia atrás y de regreso por el pequeño hueco que quedo entre ambos bucles al doblarlos. Vamos a jalarlo formando un pequeño nudo, este lo tenemos que ir ajustando para que se vaya apretando el nudo y queden ambos bucles del mismo tamaño. 

Here’s two examples: one of big bow ribbons and other of small bow ribbons. It all depends on the length of your ribbon. You can play with this to find out which size fits the most. / Aquí hay dos ejemplos: uno de moños grandes y otro de moños pequeños. Todo depende de la longitud de tu listón. Puedes jugar con esto para averiguar qué tamaño se ajusta más a lo que necesitas.

 

 

It is a pretty simple tutorial that takes about 2 minutes to complete. Buying already made bows might be a little too expensive, and sometimes we just want to save a few bucks on this kind of details. So making your own will make your gifts look original and still create the excitement they were meant to have. / Es un tutorial bastante sencillo que demora aproximadamente 2 minutos en completarse. Comprar moños ya hechos puede ser un poco caro y a veces solo queremos ahorrarnos un poco de dinero en este tipo de detalles. Por lo tanto, hacer los tuyos hará que tus regalos se vean originales y aún así crearan la emoción a la que estaban destinados.
