Christmas tree star / Estrella para el árbol de navidad

Placing a star on a Christmas tree is a tradition for many of us, just like placing ornaments and string lights, but have you ever wondered what the star represents? The star is also known as the “Star of Bethlehem” giving reference to the star that guided the three wise men to Jesus’s  birthplace in Nazareth. The star represents the birth of Jesus Christ. / Colocar una estrella en un árbol de navidad es una tradición para muchos de nosotros, al igual que colocar adornos y luces de cuerda, pero ¿alguna vez te has preguntado qué representa la estrella? La estrella también es conocida como la “Estrella de Belén” ya que hace referencia a la estrella que guió a los tres Reyes Magos al lugar de nacimiento de Jesús en Nazaret. La estrella representa el nacimiento de Jesucristo.

In some cases people place an angel instead of a star on top of the tree. The Ángel Gabriel is a prominent figure within various religions, he acts as a representative of God delivering messages or foretelling the future. He appears in both the old and new testament of the Holy Bible. In the nativity story Angel Gabriel was in charge of informing and guiding the shephards to Jesus’s birth. Nowadays angels are seen as protectors against evil spirits. / En algunos casos las personas colocan un ángel en lugar de una estrella. El ángel Gabriel es una figura prominente dentro de varias religiónes, actúa como un representante de Dios entregando mensajes o prediciendo el futuro. Aparece tanto en el antiguo como en el nuevo testamento de la Santa Biblia. En la historia de la natividad, el Angel Gabriel fue el encargado de informar y guiar a los pastores al nacimiento de Jesucristo. Hoy en día los ángeles son vistos como protectores contra los espíritus malignos.

Materials needed / Materiales necesarios:

• Jute cord / Cuerda de yute
• Wooden sticks / Palos de madera
• Silicone / Silicón
• Pliers / Pinzas industriales

Steps / Pasos:

1. The size of the wooden sticks will determine the size of our star. Since my wooden sticks are too long I will start by cutting them by the middle and forming two smaller sticks. If your wooden sticks are already the size you want your star to be then you can skip this step. / El tamaño de los palos de madera determinará el tamaño de nuestra estrella. Como mis palos de madera son demasiado largos, comenzaré cortándolos por el medio, formando dos palos más pequeños. Si tus palos de madera ya tienen el tamaño que deseas que tenga tu estrella entonces puedes omitir este paso.

2. Start joining the wooden sticks by the edge with silicone in order to form the shape of a star. Then let it dry. Try to glue the corners as close to the edges as possible, this way when you tangle the cord it will hide better. / Comienza a unir los palos de madera por las esquinas con silicón para hacer la forma de una estrella. Luego déjalo secar. Intenta pegar las esquinas lo más pegado a las orillas posible, de esta forma cuando enredes el cordón se podrá esconder mejor.

3. Once dry, tangle the jute cord all over the star in order to cover the wooden sticks. When you are done you can tie it with a knot. / Una vez seco enreda el cordón de yute sobre la estrella de tal forma que cubras los palos de madera. Cuando hayas terminado, puedes atarlo con un nudo.

If your wooden sticks are popping out when you are done tangling the cord, you can use the pliers to cut them short and hide them. / Si los palos de madera se salen cuando termines de enredar la cuerda, puede usar las pinzas industriales para cortarlos y esconderlos.

Once your star is all covered up with the cord then you’re done! You can now place your star on top of your Christmas tree. / Una vez que tú estrella esté cubierta por completo con la cuerda entonces haz terminado. ¡Ahora puedes colocar tu estrella en la punta hasta arriba de tu árbol navideño!
