How to make a piñata ornament? /¿Cómo hacer una piñata de adorno?

A piñata is a typical and traditional element to celebrate Mexican festivities. Originally piñatas were made out of clay, then they were covered with tissue paper of various colors and filled with typical fruits of the season, candies, among other things. These were destroyed with a stick while being blindfolded. The idea was to take all the contents of the piñata as soon as they fell and to enjoy the “prize”. Now a days, modern piñatas are made out of newspapers and tissue paper, however they are still an essential part of Mexican celebrations. / Una piñata es un elemento típico y tradicional para celebrar los festejos mexicanos. Originalmente las piñatas estaban hechas de barro, después eran cubiertas con papel de china de una variedad de colores y rellenas de frutas típicas de la temporada, dulces y otras cosas. Estas se destruían con un palo mientras tenias vendados los ojos. La idea era llevarse todo el contenido de la piñata en cuanto este cayera y disfrutar del “premio”. Actualmente las piñatas modernas se hacen con periódico y papel de china, sin embargo siguen siendo parte esencial de los festejos mexicanos.

The inspiration for this craft came to me when I bought a pair of shoes and brought them home, they came in a simple cardboard box which I didn’t see appropriate to just throw away and I wanted to give it another use instead of just generating more garbage. That is how it came to me to make a small piñata as an ornament. It is quite simple to make and I think it looks very chic. If you are looking to decorate a themed party, or just want it as decor, then you will love it. / Esta manualidad me llego como inspiración al comprar unos zapatos y traerlos a mi casa, venían en una caja sencilla de cartón la cual no vi apropiado tirarla y busque darle otra función al cartón en lugar de solamente generar basura. Así fue como se me ocurrió hacer una pequeña piñata de adorno. Fue bastante sencilla de crear y creo que quedo muy chic. Si estas buscando decorar una fiesta temática, o solamente lo quieres como decoración, entonces creo que te encantara. 

Materials needed / Materiales necesarios:

• A piece of cardboard / Un pedazo de cartón
• Scissors / Tijeras
• Glue / Pegamento
• Marker / Marcador
• Tape / Cinta adhesiva
• Tissue paper / Papel de china

Steps / Pasos:

1. Start by painting the shape of a horse with a marker on a piece of cardboard and cut it out. / Comienza pintando la forma de un caballo con un marcador sobre un pedazo de carton y recórtalo. 

2. Take the piece you just trimmed and use it as a guide to draw another horse exactly the same. Then cut it out. / Toma la pieza que acabas de recortar y utilízala como guía para trazar otro caballo exactamente igual. Después recórtalo.

3. For the sides of the piñata we need to cut cardboard rectangles of the same width. Then place the rectangle on one of the sides of one of our pieces at the edge and use tape to paste it together. Start molding the cardboard to the shape of the horse. You can use as much tape as you feel necessary, it will not affect our piñata outcome. / Para los lados de la piñata necesitamos cortar rectángulos de cartón del mismo ancho. Luego coloca el rectángulo en uno de los lados de una de nuestras piezas en el borde y usa cinta adhesiva para pegarlo. Comienza a moldear el cartón a la forma del caballo. Puedes usar la cantidad de cinta adhesiva que consideres necesaria, no afectará el resultado de nuestra piñata.

4. Once you have finished pasting the rectangles on the border you can take the missing piece and paste it on the top to close the figure. / Una vez que hayas terminado de pegar los rectángulos en la orilla puedes tomar la pieza faltante y pegarla en el tope para cerrar la figura. 

5. Cut long rectangles out of the Chinese paper of different colors and along one of the edges cut small lines that reach the middle of the paper. Then glue them on the horse by putting glue on the edge of the paper that has no cut lines. / Recorta rectángulos largos de papel china de distintos colores y a lo largo de una de las orillas corta pequeñas líneas que lleguen a la mitad del papel. Después pégalos sobre el caballo poniendo pegamento sobre la orilla que no tiene las líneas recortadas. 

Note: each rectangular color you paste should be glued leaving enough space to not overlap the color before and still cover about half the paper of the last color. / Nota: cada color de rectángulo que pegues debe pegarse dejando espacio suficiente para no superponer el color anterior y cubrir aproximadamente la mitad del papel del último color.
