How to make a skull box? / ¿Cómo hacer una caja de calaveras?

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition in which the dead are honored and celebrated. In Mexico this holiday is celebrated for two days, the first day is when it is believed that the souls of children arrive and the 2nd of November when the souls of the adults arrive. The most representative element of this holiday are the altars of the dead, which are full of meaning. / El Día de muertos es una tradición mexicana donde se le celebra y honra a los muertos. En México el día de los muertos se celebra durante dos días, el 1 que es cuando se cree que llegan las almas de los niños y el 2 de noviembre que es cuando llegan las almas de los adultos. El elemento más representativo de esta festividad son los altares de muertos, los cuales están llenos de significado. 

On the 1st of November sweet food, such as pan de muerto, pumpkin, chocolate and traditional cempasuchil flowers, is placed on the altar. And for the second day, the favorite food of the deceased is placed, this may include tequila, beer and mezcal. Additionaly these two days are accompanied with incense. Traditional altars used to have up to 7 levels representing the levels that the soul must go through to reach its spiritual destination. However, today most altars have 2 levels making the division between heaven and earth. / El 1ro de noviembre se coloca en el altar la comida dulce tal como el pan de muerto, calabaza, chocolate y las flores tradicionales cempasuchil. El segundo día se coloca la comida preferida de el o los difuntos esta puede incluir tequila, cerveza y mezcal. Adicional se acompaña estos dos días con incienso. Los altares tradicionales solían contar de hasta 7 niveles representando los niveles que debe atravesar el alma para llegar a su descanso espiritual. Sin embargo, hoy en día la mayoría de los altares cuentan con 2 niveles haciendo la división entre el cielo y la tierra. 

Each element placed on the altar has a meaning: / Cada elemento puesto en el altar cuenta con un significado:

• The incense represents the purification of the soul and its smell guides the soul of the dead to the altar. / El incienso representa la purificación del alma y su aroma es el que guía el alma de los difuntos al altar.
• The flowers are placed in the form of an arch and must go on the first level. They symbolize the door that connects the world of the dead. / Las flores se colocan en forma de arco y deben ir en el primer nivel estas simbolizan la puerta que conecta al mundo de los muertos.
• The chopped paper or colored skulls represent purity and grief. / El papel picado u calaveras de colores representan la pureza y el duelo.
• The candles are there to light the way back of the souls to their abode. The number of candles represent the number of deceased. / Las velas están para alumbrar el camino de vuelta de las almas a su morada. El número de veladoras representa el número de difuntos.
• The bread of the dead: the strips on the bread represent the cross and bones, and the sesame seeds the tears of those souls who still have not been able to rest. / El pan de muertos: las tiras sobre el pan representan la cruz y los huesos y los ajonjolís las lagrimas de aquellas almas que no han encontrado descansar.
• Sugar or chocolate skulls: its purpose is to make fun of death and at the same time make reference to it. / Calaveritas de azúcar o chocolate: su propósito es burlarse de la muerte y al mismo tiempo hacer alusión de ella. 
• Xoloescuincle dog: help souls to cross over / Perro xoloescuincle: ayudar a las almas a cruzar
• It is important that water is never lacking on an altar as it is to quench the visitor’s thirst after their long journey back. / Es importante que nunca falte agua en un altar ya que esta para calmar la sed del visitante después de su largo trayecto de vuelta.
• And the salt that symbolizes the purification and serves to care for the soul of the deceased and help it is not corrupted on its return trip. / Y la sal que simboliza la purificación y sirve para cuidar el alma del difunto y que no se corrompa en su viaje de vuelta.

This a very special tradition in Mexico, therefore I wished to share with you an easy craft regarding Day of the Dead. / Esta es una tradición muy especial en México, por lo tanto, quería compartirles una manualidad fácil con respecto al Día de los Muertos.

Materials needed / Materiales necesarios:

• Wooden box / Caja de madera 
• Acrylic paints / Pinturas acrílicas
• Pencil / Lápiz

Steps / Pasos:

1. The wooden box is really easy to find and cheap, I bought it on an arts & craft store. So basically take your pencil and draw a sketch of the skulls you want on each side of your box. If the box has a lid remember to take that into consideration when making the design of the sides of the box, so the design doesn’t become affected when closed. / La caja de madera es realmente fácil de encontrar y barata, la compré en una tienda de manualidades. Básicamente, toma tu lápiz y dibuja un boceto de las calaveras que deseas en cada lado de tu caja. Si la caja tiene una tapa, recuerda tener esto en cuenta al hacer el diseño de los lados de la caja para que el diseño no se vea afectado cuando la cierres.

2. Once you have your designs you can take the acrylic paints and start having fun by painting your art. / Una vez que tengas tus diseños, puedes tomar las pinturas acrílicas y comenzar a divertirte pintando tu arte.
