Without really thinking about it, over the years we have been relating certain colors to festivities, the best example would be Christmas. When we think of Christmas, colors like red, green and white come to mind. Another example would be Valentine’s Day that bring us red and pink colors. However, when we think of Halloween, the colors we think of are orange and black. But what meaning do these two colors have and why do we relate them to Halloween? / Sin realmente pensarlo a través de los años hemos ido relacionando ciertos colores con festividades, el mejor ejemplo sería Navidad. Cuando pensamos en Navidad se nos vienen a la mente colores como el rojo, verde y el blanco. Otro ejemplo sería San Valentín que nos traen colores rojos y rosas. Sin embargo, cuando pensamos en Halloween los colores en los que pensamos son el naranja y el negro. ¿Pero que significado tienen estos dos colores y porque los relacionamos con Halloween?

The color orange is associated with joy, heat, sun, fun, and happiness. With time we have learned to associate it also with the month of October since it is the time of year when tree leaves change color and pumpkin decorations begin. The change of color to orange of leaves is something we only appreciate once a year and it is during this time that we celebrate Halloween. / El color naranja esta asociado a la alegría, el calor, sol, diversión, y a la felicidad. Incluso con el tiempo lo hemos aprendido a asociar con el mes de Octubre ya que es la época en que cambian de color las hojas de los arboles y comienzan las decoraciones con calabazas. El cambio del color de las hojas a naranja lo presenciamos solamente una vez al año durante esta época que es Halloween.

On the other hand, the color black is related to darkness, evil, night, along with the underworld and spirits. At the Samhain festival it was believed that the spirits came out of the darkness to stay. This is why the color black was associated. En el festival de Samhain se creía que los espíritus salían de la oscuridad para quedarse. Es por esto que se asocio el color negro. Materials needed / Materiales necesarios:

• Orange crepe paper / Papel crepe naranja
• Black crepe paper / Papel crepe negro
• Scissors / Tijeras
• Adhesive tape / Cinta adhesiva
• Yarn / Estambre
• Wooden skulls / Calaveras de madera

Steps / Pasos:

1. Cut five pieces of yarn the length you need them to be, in my case I was planning on placing the whole piece on one of my living room walls so I cut the yarns the height of the wall. / Corta cinco pedazos de estambre del largo que lo necesiten, en mi caso estaba planeando colocar esta manualidad en una de las paredes de mi sala de estar, así que corté los estambres de la misma altura de la pared.

2. Start by placing a wooden skull on each piece of yarn on different heights , this way the skulls won’t crash together. Pass the piece of yarn through the holes of the wooden skull to make a small knot on the top and then on the bottom in orden to fasten it. / Comienza colocando una calavera de madera en cada estambre en diferentes alturas, de esta manera las calaveras no chocarán entre sí. Pasa el estambre a través de los agujeros del cráneo de madera para hacer un pequeño nudo en la parte superior y luego en la parte inferior para sujetarlo.

3. Let’s start using the orange crepe paper. Cut out the shape of a rectangle, the size of this will depend on how big you want to make your flower. / Vamos a comenzar utilizando el papel crepe naranja. Recorta la forma de un rectángulo, el tamaño de este dependerá de que tan grande deseas hacer tu flor. 

4. Fold the rectangle in half twice, we want to have a smaller but thicker rectangle. / Dobla el rectángulo a la mitad dos veces, queremos tener un rectángulo más pequeño pero grueso.

5. Starting by one of the long edges, fold the paper back and forth as if you were making a zig-zag. / Comenzando por uno de los bordes largos, dobla el papel hacia adelante y hacia atrás como si estuvieras haciendo un zig-zag.

6. With a piece of thread make a tight knot in the middle of the folded paper. / Toma un pedazo de hilo y haz un nudo apretado en el medio de nuestro papel doblado.

7. Spread the sides of the paper so that the flower starts to gain shape. Place small pieces of tape underneath the flower to ensure that both stretched parts remain open. / Extiende los lados del papel de tal forma que se forme la flor. Con pequeños pedazos de cinta adhesiva pega por debajo la flor para asegurar que ambas partes estiradas se mantengan abiertas.

8. We will repeat these steps to make several orange flowers depending on the amount we need. We can begin to stick them with tape on our yarn, leaving space for a black flower between each orange flower. / Vamos a repetir estos pasos para hacer varias flores naranjas dependiendo de la cantidad que necesitemos. Podemos comenzar a pegarlas con cinta adhesiva sobre nuestro estambre, dejando espacio para la flor negra entre cada flor naranja.

9. Repeat steps 3 to 8, we are going to do exactly the same thing we did for the orange flower except it is now going to be black. When you are done paste the black flowers on the yarns on the spaces we left between the orange flowers. / Repite los pasos 3 al 8, haremos exactamente lo mismo que hicimos para la flor naranja excepto que ahora será negra. Al terminar pega las flores negras en los estambres en los espacios que dejamos entre las flores naranjas.

10. Take the top of all the yarn strings and secure them tightly onto a stick. This way it will be much easier to manage and move once you transfer them to the wall you want them on. / Toma la parte superior de todas las cuerdas de estambre y apriételas en un palo. De esta manera, será mucho más fácil de manejar y mover una vez que las transfieras al muro en el que lo quieres.
