Make a Halloween garland? / Haz una guirnalda de Halloween

When it comes to halloween decorations we tend to lean on typical stores that provide these cool items year by year, but the problem comes when everyone of your neighbors thinks the same way you do and you end up having either the same items or the same decoration. What is original about that, right? By deciding to make your own halloween decorations you will ensure your house looks unique and you’ll be the one in control of deciding how scary you want it to be. / Cuando se trata de decoraciones de Halloween tendemos a apoyarnos en las tiendas típicas que ofrecen estos artículos geniales año tras año, pero el problema surge cuando todos tus vecinos piensan de la misma manera que tú y terminas teniendo los mismos artículos o la misma decoración. ¿Qué tiene de original esto cierto? Al decidir hacer tus propias decoraciones de Halloween te asegurarás de que tu casa se vea única y tu tendrás el control de decidir cuán aterrador quieres que sea.

On my last post I shared a tutorial on How to make Halloween bottles?/¿Cómo hacer Botellas de Halloween?, this is more like an inside your house or office craft since they are made out of glass bottles. On this post I will show you step by step how to make a halloween garland that has ghosts, pumpkins and spiders made out of   yarn. It is actually not as hard as it sounds, on the contrary it is pretty easy and I am sure you are going to love it. / En mi última publicación compartí un tutorial sobre ¿Cómo hacer botellas de Halloween? / ¿Cómo hacer Botellas de Halloween ?, es más como una manualidad para dentro de tu casa u oficina ya que están hechas de botellas de vidrio. En esta publicación te mostraré paso a paso cómo hacer borlas de halloween que tengan fantasmas, calabazas y arañas de estambre. En realidad no es tan difícil como suena, por el contrario es bastante fácil y estoy segura de que te va a encantar.

What materials do you need? / Que materiales necesitas?

• Yarn: orange, green, black, and white / Estambre: naranja, verde, negro y blanco
• Scissors / Tijeras
• A piece of thick paper / Un pedazo de papel grueso
• A black marker / Un marcador negro

Steps / Pasos:

¿How to make a yarn ghost? / ¿Cómo hacer un fantasma de estambre?

1. In order to start creating our ghost out of yarn we are going to need to take a thick piece of paper and cut it into the shape of a rectangle. The width of our rectangle will depend on how long we want our ghost to be. /  Para poder comenzar a crear nuestro fantasma de estambre vamos a necesitar tomar un pedazo grueso de papel y recortarlo en la forma de un rectángulo. El ancho de nuestro rectángulo dependerá de que tan largo queremos que sea nuestro fantasma.

2. Start by wrapping the white yarn in the rectangle paper. Let’s give it as many laps as we think necessary. Cut the yarn when you think you have enough yarn around it. / Empieza enrollando el estambre blanco en el rectángulo de papel. Vamos a darle cuantas vueltas creamos necesarias. Corta el estambre cuando pienses que tiene suficientes vueltas. 

3. Cut a piece of white yarn, this should be long enough since we want it to spare in order to hang our ghosts from it at the end. Take the piece of yarn and pass it under our piece, we are going to make a knot. We want to join all the threads together while also leaving a piece of the yarn to hang. / Corta un pedazo de estambre blanco, este debe ser lo suficientemente largo ya que queremos que sobre para poder colgar nuestros fantasmas utilizando el mismo pedazo al final. Toma el pedazo de estambre y pásalo por debajo de nuestra pieza, vamos a hacerle un nudo. Queremos unir todos los hilos del estambre y al mismo tiempo dejar que un pedazo del estambre quede colgando.

4. Slide the piece out of the paper in a way that they end up separate. Then cut another piece of yarn, this will help us give shape to our ghost’s face. Use the hanging thread of yarn in our piece as a reference to where the top of your ghost is. Then leave some space from top to bottom and make a knot. / Desliza la pieza fuera del papel de manera que terminen por separado. Luego corta otro hilo, esto nos ayudará a darle la forma a la cara de nuestro fantasma. Usa el hilo colgante en nuestra pieza como referencia de dónde está la parte superior de tu fantasma. Luego deja un poco de espacio de arriba hacia abajo y haz un nudo.

5. With scissors cut in half the loops at the bottom of our ghost. / Con tijeras corta a la mitad los bucles en la parte de abajo de nuestro fantasma.

6. Take a black marker and make two small dots for the eyes. You should make several ghosts like this depending on the garland you are planning to do. / Toma un marcador negro y haz dos puntos pequeños para los ojos. Deberás hacer varios fantasmas como este dependiendo de la guirnalda que tengas planeada hacer. 

¿How to make a yarn pumpkin? / ¿Cómo hacer una calabaza de estambre?

1. The process for making a pumpkin is fairly similar to the one of a ghost. Start by wrapping an orange yarn on the same rectangle paper we used for the ghost. / El proceso para hacer una calabaza es bastante similar al del fantasma. Comienza envolviendo estambre naranja en el mismo papel rectangular que usamos para el fantasma.

2. Take a large piece of green yarn and use it to make a knot in the middle of our orange piece. Then with another knot join the ends of the green string yarn. / Toma un pedazo grande de estambre verde y úsalo para hacer un nudo en el centro de nuestra pieza. Luego, con otro nudo une los extremos de la cuerda verde.

3. Slide the piece out of the paper and cut in half the loops at the bottom. With an additional orange string, make a knot at the bottom of the piece joining all the strings together. / Deslice la pieza fuera del papel y corta por la mitad los bucles en la parte inferior. Con una cuerda adicional naranja haz un nudo en la parte inferior de la pieza, uniendo todas las cuerdas.

4. Now take the bottom of the knot and fold it upward. We want to make sure the knot is hidden inside the strings of yarn. / Ahora toma la parte de abajo del nudo y dóblalo hacia arriba. Queremos asegurarnos de que el nudo quede oculto dentro de los hilos.

¿How to make a yarn spider? / ¿Cómo hacer una araña de estambre?

1. The spider is the easiest one of all, you are going to need the same rectangular piece of paper used for the ghost and pumpkin. This time we are going to fold the rectangle in half. / La araña es la más fácil de todas, vas a necesitar el mismo papel rectangular utilizado para el fantasma y la calabaza. Ahora vamos a doblar el rectángulo por la mitad.

2. Wrap the black yarn around it, make sure it has enough yarn since we want to make it very puffy. When you are done wrapping the yarn leave a long string at the end and cut the yarn. / Envuelve el estambre negro alrededor, asegúrate de que tenga suficiente estambre ya que queremos que quede llenito. Cuando termines de envolver el estambre, deja un hilo largo al final y corta el estambre. 

3. Use that string to make a knot on your piece. We want to make sure all the strings of yarn are held together. You should have something like this. / Usa el hilo para hacerle un nudo a nuestra pieza. Queremos asegurarnos de que todas las cuerdas del estambre queden unidas. Deberías tener algo como esto.

4. Now cut the loops at the bottom in half so that all the strings are free. And you’ve got your spider! / Ahora corta los bucles en la parte inferior por la mitad para que todas las cuerdas estén libres. ¡Y tienes tu araña!
