Make DIY Halloween planters / Haz macetas de Halloween DIY

When you think of Halloween the first thing that comes to your mind might be the desire and excitement to decorate your entire home. The fun thing about this day is that it lets you use your imagination and exploit it to the fullest, since it allows you to decorate whichever way you want, whether it’s terrifying, scary or simply adorable. / Cuando piensas en halloween lo primero que se te viene a la mente son las ganas y emoción de decorar todo tu hogar. Lo padre de esta fecha es que te permite utilizar tu imaginación y explotarla al máximo, ya que puedes adornar de la manera que te guste ya sea terrorífica, de miedo o simplemente adorable. 

However, picking up and putting everything away afterwards could make us feel lazy and rethink decorating since Halloween ornaments are only placed for a month. But what if I told you that you could decorate your home and not have to remove the ornaments throughout the whole year? And that in the process you would have fun designing them yourself?  / Sin embargo, a muchos les puede dar flojera decorar su hogar ya que estos adornos solo los podemos tener puestos durante un mes. Pero ¿que si te dijera que puedes decorar y no tener que retirar estos adornos en todo el año? Y además en el proceso te podrás divertir diseñándolos tu misma.

In this tutorial you will learn to transform simple terracota planters to ones with horrific, scary or adorable Halloween designs that will give a special touch to your Halloween or regular decorations. As I mentioned before you will be able to keep them out throughout the whole year, with a special trick that will let you place your pots outside or inside your house without worrying about the paint washing off.  / En este tutorial aprenderás a transformar simples macetas de terracota a unas con diseños terroríficos o adorables de Halloween que le darán un toque especial a tus decoraciones o podrían ser tu decoración de Halloween. Como mencione antes podrás mantener la maceta todo el año como decoración ya que con un truco especial podrás colocar las plantas en el interior o exterior de tu casa sin preocuparte de que se despinte. 

What materials do you need? / ¿Qué materiales necesitas?

• Terracota planters (any size you want) / Macetas de terracota (de cualquier tamaño que quieras)
• Acrylic paints (I used black, green, white, yellow and orange) / Pinturas de acrílico (Yo utilice negro, verde, blanco, amarillo y naranja)
• Varnish sealer / Barniz sellador
• Brushes / Pinceles
• Plants / Plantas

Steps / Pasos:

1. We are going to begin by painting all of our terracota planters with our base color. Green for Frankenstein, white for the mummy, orange for the pumpkin, and purple for the vampire. / Vamos a comenzar pintando nuestras macetas de terracota con nuestro color base. Verde para Frankenstein, blanco para la momia, naranja para la calabaza y morado para el vampiro.

2. Once they are dry we can give them shape. Let’s start with Frankenstein. Make the shape of the eyes with the white acrylic paint, then with the black acrylic paint contour the eyes, make the eyebrows, the shape of the mouth, the pupils, the hair and some scars. Then with the white paint make the teeth. / Una vez que se hayan secado podemos darles forma. Vamos a hacer la forma de los ojos con la pintura acrílica blanca, después  vamos a tomar la pintura acrílica negra y vamos a delinear la forma de los ojos, las cejas, la forma de la boca, las pupilas, el pelo y algunas cicatrices. Finalmente tomando la pintura blanca nuevamente le vamos a rellenar los dientes.

3. Now we can work on our pumpkin, taking the black paint make the shape of the eyes and the mouth. Then with the white start filling in the eyes and some teeth, I also took a bit of yellow paint to highlight the teeth. You can place some pumpkin lines at the sides with the black paint and highlight them with a bit of yellow. And maybe put some green hair on top just like I did. / Ahora podemos trabajar en nuestra calabaza, tomando la pintura negra dale forma a los ojos y la boca. Luego, con la pintura blanca empieza a pintar los ojos y algunos dientes, también tomé un poco de pintura amarilla para resaltar los dientes. Puedes colocar algunas líneas de calabaza a los lados con pintura negra y resaltarlas con un poco de amarillo. Y tal vez poner un poco de pelo verde encima como hice yo.

3. We’re doing fantastic! Now let’s make a mummy. Take the black paint and make a thick oval shape, this is where the eyes of our mummy will be, then make several lines around the pot, these are the bandages that cover our mommy. You can make a line that resembles the shape of the mouth and fill it in with a red color. To finish the mummy I took the yellow paint and highlighted the bandages to give my mummy more color. / ¡Lo están haciendo fantástico! Ahora hagamos una momia. Toma la pintura negra y haz una forma ovalada gruesa aquí es donde irán los ojos de nuestra momia, luego haz varias líneas alrededor de la maceta, estas son las vendas que cubren a nuestra momia. Puedes hacer una línea que se parezca a la forma de la boca y rellenarla con una pintura roja. Para terminar yo tome la pintura amarilla y resalte las vendas para darle a mi momia un poco más de color.

4. I hope these steps have been pretty simple for you to follow along. We need to let them dry before applying the varnish sealer. The varnish sealer is the special trick I had mentioned above, this product will help you keep the paint from washing off. What do you need to do? Cover the inside and the outside of your pot with this material, once it dries out it’ll become transparent so don’t worry about it ruining your design. / Espero que estos pasos hayan sido bastante sencillos de seguir hasta el momento. Necesitamos dejar que se sequen antes de aplicar el barniz sellador. El barniz sellador es el truco especial que les mencione al principio, este producto les ayudará a prevenir que la pintura de sus macetas se despinte. ¿Qué es lo que necesitas hacer? Cubre el interior y exterior de cada maceta con el barniz sellador, una vez que se haya secado se volverá transparente así que no hay de que preocuparse ya que no dañara tu diseño.
