Car planter with dry air clay/Maceta de coche con pasta moldeable

When it comes to finding some special gift for our fathers it can become very difficult, mostly because after a few years you want to be spontaneous and gift something else than the typical gifts such as clothing, frames, etc. But the problem is what can we give them that is different? / Cuando se trata de buscarle un regalo especial a nuestros padres se puede volver algo complicado, especialmente después de algunos años cuando buscar ser espontáneo y darle algún regalo distinto a los regalos comunes como son la ropa, cuadros, etc. ¿Pero el problema es que le podemos dar que sea distinto?

After searching throughly the internet for ideas and looking at some incredible pot designs I came up with the idea of making a pot with the shape of a car. My father loves cars, he collects car toys and had worked in a big car company for a long time. And since father’s day was coming up I thought it would be a fun gift with a touch of nature. / Después de buscar a profundidad ideas en el internet y ver algunas macetas con increíbles diseños se me ocurrió crear una maceta con la forma de un coche. A mi padre le encantan los coches, de hecho colecciona los juguetes de coches y trabajo durante años en una gigantesca empresa de automóviles. Y ya que se acercaba el día del padre, decidí que sería un regalo divertido con un toque de naturaleza.  

I must say this was not such an easy task, it requieres patience and time. You need to have at least a week to let it dry and finish all the touches, so plan accordingly. It was worth it at the end and hopefully you’ll think so too. / Debo decir que no fue una manualidad muy sencilla y requiere mucha paciencia y tiempo. Necesitan tener al menos una semana para dejarlo secar y ponerle los toques finales, para que lo planeen con tiempo. Al final valió mucho la pena y espero ustedes piensen lo mismo.

Materials needed / Materiales necesarios:

• Dry air clay / Pasta moldeable
• Roller / Rodillo
• Cutting tools / Herramientas de corte

• Paper / Papel
• Pencil / Lápiz
• Acrylic painting / Pinturas acrílicas
• Varnish Sealer / Barníz sellador
• Brushes / Pinceles

Steps / Pasos:

1. Trace on a paper the outline of the car you want and cut it out. / Traza en un papel el contorno del coche que quieres y recórtalo. 

2. Spread a chunk of dry clay and mold it evenly on the table with the help of a roller. Taking your cut out paper and use it as a guide to cut out two car shapes. / Extiende un trozo de arcilla seca y moldéalo uniformemente sobre la mesa con la ayuda de un rodillo. Toma el papel cortado y úsalo como guía para recortar dos formas de automóvil.

3. Cut a rectangle longer than the shapes we cut out on our last steps, this will be the middle piece of our planter the one that holds both sides. On the middle of our rectangle be sure to make a round whole to let the water drain. Then, place the rectangle on the side of one of our previous pieces and push the clay lightly on the other piece to ensure that they stick together. The rectangle will take the shape of the car. / Corta un rectángulo que sea más largo que las formas que cortamos en el último paso, esta será la pieza central de nuestra maceta, la que sostiene ambos lados. En el centro de nuestro rectángulo asegúrate de hacer un hoyo redondo para dejar que el agua se drene. Luego, colocas el rectángulo sobre el costado de alguna de nuestras piezas anteriores y empujas ligeramente la arcilla sobre la otra pieza para asegurar que se peguen juntas. El rectángulo ira tomando la forma del coche. 

4. Take the other side of the car and do exactly the same to close the planter. You can help yourself placing something inside the car to maintain both sides in place. Also you can slide you finger lightly over the surfaces that are rough or cracked and this will help fix them. It will take about two days to dry completely. / Tome el otro lado del auto y haga exactamente lo mismo para cerrar la maceta. Puedes ayudarte colocando algo dentro del automóvil para mantener ambos lados en su lugar. También puedes deslizar un dedo ligeramente sobre las superficies ásperas o agrietadas esto te ayudará a corregirlas. Tardará unos dos días en secarse completamente. 

5. Once it has dried out you can trace your design with a pencil and start painting with the acrylic paints. / Una vez que se ha secado, puedes trazar tu diseño con un lápiz y comenzar a pintar con las pinturas acrílicas. 

6. This is the most important step, you now have to glaze it completely well with the varnish sealer. If you miss a spot or don’t seal it completely then the moment when you put some water in your plants it will come crumbling down. / Este es el paso más importante, ahora tienes que barnizarlo completamente bien con el barniz sellador. Si no lo haces o no cubres un lugar, en el momento en que pongas un poco de agua en tus plantas se derrumbará.

7. When the varnish sealer dries out, you can place your plants inside and you are done! / Cuando se seque el barniz sellador, puedes poner tus plantas adentro y haz terminado!
