Craft your own curtains / Crea tus propias cortinas

Need to redecorate your living room, bedroom or so with new curtains? Why not make them yourself? With this very easy tutorial you’ll make your room stand out with amazing curtains! / Necesitas redecorar tu sala, cuarto o algún espacio con nuevas cortinas? Porque no hacerlas tú mismo? ¡Con este fácil tutorial harás lucir tu cuarto con increíbles cortinas!

Materials needed / Materiales necesarios:

• Fabric / Tela
• Ruler / Regla
• Scissors / Tijeras
• Pins / Alfileres
• Sewing machine / Maquina de coser
• Thread / Hilo
• Metal pipe / Tubo de metal
• 2 curtain knobs for the metal pipe / 2 perillas para de cortina el tubo
• Wall hooks / Ganchos para pared
• Screws / Tornillos
• Drill / Rotomartillo
• Drill bit / Broca
• Rawl plugs / Taquetes
• Screw driver / Desarmador

Steps / Pasos:

1. Let’s start by measuring the space we want to decorate. In my case it will be a window in a room and my measurements were 3 meters long x 2.5 meters high. This is the fabric size that we are going to need, if the measurements of the fabric are not what you need you can adapt them by sewing the missing pieces. In my case I had to buy 3 pieces of fabric with measurements of 1 meter long and 2.5 meters high. We are going to divide in two our total measure, therefore the measure of a curtain will be 1.5 meters long x 2.5 meters high and the other exactly the same. / Vamos a comenzar midiendo el espacio que queremos decorar. En mi caso será la ventana de un cuarto y mis medidas son 3 metros de largo x 2.5 metros de alto. Este es el tamaño de tela que vamos a necesitar, si las medidas de la tela no son lo que necesitas puedes adaptarlas cosiendo los pedazos faltantes. En mi caso tuve que comprar 3 pedazos de tela con medidas de 1 metro de largo y 2.5 metros de alto. Para esto vamos a dividir en dos nuestra medida total, por lo tanto la medida de una cortina sera de 1.5 metros de largo x 2.5 metros de alto y la otra exactamente igual. 

2. In my case I had to divide the extra fabric into two so I could sew the rest of the necessary measure to both sides. And make it 1.5 meters long. / En mi caso tuve que dividir la tela extra en dos para poder coserle el resto de la medida necesaria a ambos lados. Y hacerla de 1.5 metros de largo. 

3. Now we are going to sew the edges of each of our curtain sides by folding them on to the side of the fabric we don’t want to face. The measurements should look like the image below. We will do this for both curtains. / Ahora vamos a coser los bordes de cada uno de nuestros lados de la cortina doblando hacia el lado de la tela que no queremos de frente. Las medidas deben verse como la imagen de abajo. Haremos esto para ambas cortinas.

4. With the leftover fabric we are going to make some hooks to hang our curtain. In case you do not have leftover fabric, you can do it with another piece of the same fabric or another fabric that combines. We are going to cut strips 10 cm long by the width you want, and sew them in half to ensure a thicker hook that does not fray. / Con la tela sobrante vamos a hacer unos ganchos para colgar nuestra cortina. En caso de que no hayas tenido sobrante, puedes hacerlo con otro cacho de la misma tela u otra tela que combine. Vamos a recortar tiras de 10 cm de largo por el ancho que quieras y a coserlas a la mitad para asegurar un gancho más grueso y que no se deshilache. 

5. Fold each strip in half and place it on top of the curtain. We are going to align the open part of our strip to the seam of the folding of the fabric of the top side of the curtain. We are going to hold with pins the folded strips on the fabric with a distance of inbetween of 16cm. When we have finished placing the hooks in place, we are going to sew them to our fabric following the seam of the folded fabric as a guide.  / Dobla cada tira por la mitad y colócala sobre la cortina. Vamos a alinear la parte abierta de nuestra tira con la costura del doblado de la tela de la parte superior de la cortina. Vamos a sujetar con alfileres las tiras plegadas sobre la línea de costura a una distancia de 16 cm entre cada una. Cuando hayamos terminado de colocar los ganchos en su lugar, los vamos a coser a nuestra tela siguiendo la costura de la tela doblada como guía.

6. For the final step, you will need to drill the hooks into the wall, pass the curtains hooks through your pipe, hang the pipe on the wall hooks and set the knobs at the end to hold the curtains inside. You can find this pipe and hooks bundle in fabric stores and it is really easy to install. / Para el último paso, deberás perforar los ganchos en la pared, pasar los ganchos de las cortinas a través de tubo, colgar el tubo con las cortinas en los ganchos y ponerle las perillas para sostener las cortinas dentro del tubo. Puede encontrar este paquete de tubo y ganchos en las tiendas de telas y es realmente fácil de instalar.
