Make a dog bed in a tire / Haz una cama de perro en una llanta

Ever wondered what happened to all those used tires? They mostly become trash, and if you’re all for helping the environment well this isn’t something we want. For this project I took an abandoned tire in the street, cleaned it up and made it a cool dog bed you and your dog will love. The idea is to reuse and repurpose all those items or products that only help increase contamination. / ¿Alguna vez te has preguntado qué pasó con todos esos neumáticos usados? En su mayoría se convierten en basura y si esta a favor de ayudar al medio ambiente, no es algo que queremos. Para este proyecto, tomé una llanta abandonada en la calle, la limpié y la hice una cama para perros que a ti y a tu perro les encantará. La idea es reutilizar y re-adaptar todos aquellos artículos o productos que solo ayudan a aumentar la contaminación.

Materials / Materiales:

• Used tire / Llanta usada
• Medium brush / Brocha mediana
• Small brush / Brocha pequeña
• 3 acrylic small bottle colors: yellow, red and purple / 3 pinturas chicas de acrílico: amarillo, rojo y morado
• 1 pink varnish acrylic paint / 1 pintura rosa acrílica esmalte
• 1 meter long brown fabric / 1 metro de largo de tela café
• Needle / Aguja
• Sewing machine / Máquina de coser
• Brown thread / Hilo café
• Cotton / Algodón
• Scissors / Tijeras
• Pins / Alfileres
• Aerosol varnish / Barniz en aerosol

Steps / Pasos:

1. We are going to clean our tire and then use the pink varnish acrylic to paint the whole tire. Since the color won’t cover the black of the tire we have to place several coats. I would recommend two. / Vamos a limpiar nuestra llanta y luego usaremos el esmalte acrílico de color rosa para pintar toda nuestra llanta. Como el color no cubrirá por completo el negro de la llanta, tenemos que colocar varias capas. Yo recomendaría dos.

2. Once the paint has dried, we are going to make the shape of a glacier donut with the brown acrylic paint. We should paint around two or three coats to make sure it covers completely and has a good color. / Una vez que la pintura se haya secado, vamos a hacer la forma del glaseado de una dona con la pintura acrílica café. Debemos pintar alrededor de dos o tres capas para asegurarnos de que cubra completamente y tenga un buen color.

3. Taking the three resting colors we are going to make lines randomly on top of the brown color to resemble sprinkles. For this colors we should make around three coats of paint. / Tomando los tres colores de restantes, vamos a hacer líneas al azar sobre el color café que parezcan chispas. Para estos colores deberíamos hacer alrededor de tres capas de pintura.

4. When it is dry, we will take our varnish and cover our tire. We want to make sure the color endures and that it looks shiny. / Cuando se haya secado, tomaremos nuestro barniz y cubriremos nuestra llanta. Queremos asegurarnos de que el color perdure y que se vea brillante.

5. Take the brown fabric and fold it in half. You should fold it placing the side of the fabric that we don’t like on the outside. Then place the tire on top and with a light crayon outline the tire. This way we will know the measurement we need to cut out for the cushion that will go inside our tire. / Toma la tela café y dóblala por la mitad. Debes doblarla colocando el lado de la tela que no nos gusta en el exterior. Luego coloca la llanta en la parte superior y con un crayón claro delinea la llanta. De esta manera sabremos la medida que necesitamos recortar para el cojín que irá dentro de nuestra llanta.

6. Pin the outlined circle and cut it out. With our sewing machine we are going to sew the outline of our circle, but make sure to leave a small space without sewing since we are going to use it to turn over the fabric and fill it with cotton. / Con alfileres junta el círculo delineado y recórtalo. Con nuestra máquina de coser, vamos a coser el contorno de nuestro círculo, pero asegúrate de dejar un espacio pequeño sin coser ya que lo vamos a utilizar para voltear la tela y rellenarla con algodón.

7. Turn the fabric inside out and fill it through the hole with cotton. / Voltea la tela y rellénela con algodón a través del espacio abierto que dejamos.

8. When we are finished stuffing our cushion, take some pins to hold the open hole together. With a needle we are going to hand sew the remaining open space. / Cuando hayamos terminado de rellenar nuestro cojín, pon algunos alfileres para sostener el agujero abierto. Con una aguja vamos a coser a mano el espacio restante.

9. Place the cushion inside the tire. You’re done! Pretty easy right? / Coloca el cojín dentro de la llanta. ¡Has terminado! Bastante fácil ¿verdad?
