Have you ever wondered how many crafts you can do with crates? There are so many and to think they are so cheap! Crates are usually used in markets for carrying fruits and vegetables. They are made of wood and are basically boxes. After they have served their purpose they are usually disposed, this is why thinking of recycling them and giving them another purpose comes in handy. / ¿Alguna vez te has preguntado cuántas manualidades puedes hacer con huacales? ¡Hay tantas y pensar que son tan baratas! Los huacales se usan generalmente en los mercados para transportar frutas y verduras. Están hechas de madera y son básicamente cajas. Una vez que han cumplido su propósito, generalmente son desechadas por eso es útil pensar en reciclarlas y darles otro propósito.
When my sister decided to move out of the house, she barely had any furniture, so when thinking what would be a great gift I came up with a handmade bookshelf made of crates. It was a simple craft and would give the apartment a nice bohemian style. / Cuando mi hermana decidió mudarse de la casa, apenas tenía muebles. Entonces, al pensar en lo que podría ser un gran regalo, se me ocurrió un librero hecho a mano a base de huacales. Era un oficio simple y le daría al apartamento un bonito estilo bohemio.
In this post I will show you step by step how to make a bookshelf out of crates / En este post les voy a enseñar paso a paso como hacer un librero de huacales.
Materials / Materiales:
1. 8 wooden crates (all the same size) / 8 huacales de madera (todos del mismo tamaño)
2. Sand paper, in this case there are sponge sand papers that you can also get and it will make it much easier. / Papel de lija, en este caso también existen esponjas con lijas que también puedes obtener que te facilitan este proceso.
3. 1 thick brush / 1 brocha gruesa
4. Screws (not that big, medium size) / Tornillos (no tan grandes, tamaño mediano)
5. Colored wood varnish / Barniz con pintura
6. Drill / Rotomartillo
We are ready to begin! / ¡Estamos listos para comenzar!
Steps / Pasos:
1. We are going to start by making sure each crate is soft and showing almost no imperfection using our sand paper. Or if you have a sanding machine, that would make the work much faster. Of course it depends on how much work you have to put onto each crate./ Vamos a comenzar asegurándonos de que cada huacal este suave y no muestre casi ninguna imperfección con nuestra lija. O si cuentas con una máquina lijadora, eso hará que el trabajo sea mucho más rápido. Por supuesto, depende de cuánto trabajo tengas que ponerle a cada huacal.
2. After the crates have been sanded, we will varnish them. This process takes a little more time, since you have to give them time to dry up. / Una vez que los huacales hayan sido lijados, los vamos a barnizar. Este proceso es un poco más tardado ya que debemos darles tiempo para que se seque el barniz.
3. Taking the screws and our drill we wil start joining the crates together. To make the shape perfect we have to place a crate standing and the other layed down. The crates that are standing will have on top a layed crate, and the layed crate will have a standing crate, and so on. We want to creat two squares with 4 crates each. / Tomando los tornillos y nuestro taladro, comenzaremos a unir las huacales. Para que la forma sea perfecta, tenemos que colocar un huacal de pie y el otro acostado. Los huacales que están de pie tendrán encima un huacal acostado y el huacal que esta acostado tendrá una caja de pie, y así sucesivamente. Queremos crear dos cuadrados con 4 huacales cada uno.
In the end the whole bookshelf should look like the image below. / Al final el librero completo debe verse como la imagen abajo.
Congrats you have finished your bookshelf. You can give it another color or make it as big or little as you need it. In this case I just made it a simple brown color and a standard size bookshelf, because it wen along with my sisters furniture.
