Design your pots with this tutorial / Diseña tus macetas tutorial

I have always loved garden decorations, having a beautiful place is important since I believe it is a special place in our house where we are able to relax for a while and enjoy a bit of air and sun light. That is why you should invest time and creativity to make sure out garden is looking great. Sometimes little details can really bring out the colors in a place, for example pots. If you feel that your garden is in need of some color this is a great way to do so, and best of all it is an easy craft you can do yourself. / Siempre me han encantado las decoraciones de jardín, tener un lugar hermoso es importante ya que creo que es un lugar especial en nuestra casa donde podemos relajarnos un rato y disfrutar de un poco de aire y sol. Es por eso que debes invertir tiempo y creatividad para asegurarte de que el jardín se vea genial. A veces, los pequeños detalles realmente pueden resaltar los colores en un lugar, por ejemplo las macetas. Si sientes que tú jardín necesita un poco de color, esta es una excelente manera de hacerlo y lo mejor de todo es que es una artesanía fácil que puedes hacer tú mismo.

I recommend designing and painting your own pots, besides being a fun activity you will be getting the results you want at a low cost. When I tried shopping for fun color pot designs, they were mostly ugly. They barely sold pots with any kind of design, and usually offered the plain colored ones and if they had any design the price would go way up. This is why I decided to transform simple ceramic pots into colorful ones with amazing designs. In this tutorial I will give you the base for painting pots, and hopefully you’ll love it as much as I did and decorate your whole garden with pots made by you. / Recomiendo diseñar y pintar sus propias macetas, además de ser una actividad divertida obtendrás los resultados que deseas a un bajo costo. Cuando intenté comprar diseños divertidos de macetas de colores en su mayoría eran feos. Apenas vendían macetas con cualquier tipo de diseño y generalmente ofrecían las de color liso y si tenían algún diseño el precio se elevaba mucho. Es por eso que decidí transformar macetas de cerámica simples en coloridas con diseños increíbles. En este tutorial te daré la base para pintar macetas y con suerte te encantará tanto como a mí y decorarás todo tu jardín con macetas hechas por ti.

What do you need for this project? / ¿Qué necesitas para este proyecto?

1. Clay pot without any design or color / Una maceta de barro sin diseño o color

2. Water sealer white paint (there are small buckets) / Pintura blanca impermeabilizante (existen pequeños botes)

3. Blue tape for painting / Cinta adhesiva azul para pintar

4. Acrylic paints / Pinturas acrílicas

5. Transparent varnish / Barníz transparente

Now that we have all of the necessary materials we can start. / Ahora que contamos con todos los materiales podemos comenzar.

Steps / Pasos:

1. To start we are going to clean all the dust off our clay pot with a wet cloth. After letting it dry we will paint inside and out with the white paint sealer. You can paint it as many times as you think necesarry, sometimes I just paint it twice to make sure it is covered completely. / Para comenzar vamos a limpiar nuestra maceta de barro con un trapo mojado para asegurar que le hayamos quitado todo el polvo. Después, procederemos a utilizar la pintura blanca impermeable y pintaremos el interior y exterior de la maceta. Puedes darle las pasadas que creas que sean necesarias, yo normalmente le paso dos veces con la pintura impermeable para asegurarme que quede completamente cubierta de pintura.

2. After letting the paint dry we’ll proceed to place the tape. The tape will serve as a guide and make it easier to paint in a straight line, also it helps paint more easily and quicker. In my case I placed two tapes horizontally and the rest in the shape of a zig zag, my plan was to make small triangles.  / Después de dejar que la pintura se seque procederemos a colocar la cinta adhesiva. La cinta adhesiva servirá como guía y facilitará pintar en línea recta, además también ayudará a pintar de manera más fácil y rápida. En mi caso, coloqué dos cintas adhesivas horizontalmente y el resto en forma de zig zag, mi plan era hacer triángulos pequeños.

3. Once the tape has been set you can start painting the pot using your acrylic colors. On lighter colors you might want to give it a double cover. It doesn’t matter if you paint over the tape since it’s there to help you and it’ll be removed afterwards. / Una vez puesta la cinta adhesiva, puedes empezar a pintar la maceta con las pinturas acrílicas. Con colores claros quizá sea buena idea darle una doble pasada. No importa si pintas sobre la cinta adhesiva, ya que esta para ayudarte y de cualquier forma la quitaremos después. 

4. When you finish painting your design let it dry. Once dry, we can remove the tape slowly, you need to take if off slowly otherwise you might remove the white painting as well. / Cuando termines de pintar tu diseño, lo dejamos secar. Una vez seco, procederemos a retirar la cinta adhesiva lentamente, necesitas hacerlo de este modo de lo contrario puede que te lleves la pintura blanca y se acabe despintando.

5. Take the varnish and cover the exterior of the pot, the varnish will help us protect our acrylic paint by preventing it from decoloring or washing off. Let it dry. / Toma el barniz y cubre el exterior de la maceta, el barniz nos ayudará a proteger nuestra pintura acrílica previniendo que se decolore o se vaya cayendo.
